The Teachers and final year students of the department attended the awarness sessions. Ms. Maryam Erum & Ms. Zahbia Shah (Cl. Psychologist) briefed about the signs & symptoms of ASD & ADHD. While Mr. Moazzaz Ali (Cl. Psychologist) discussed signs and symptoms of Specific learning disorders along with the Etiology, risk factors & management of the mentioned disorders. SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Lahroe 2024-06-12

ASDWT Lahore conducted a Training Workshop on Autism, ADHD and Learning Disabilities at the SOS Hermann Gmeiner School in Lahore on 12th June 2024. for the Awareness Seminar on Neurodevelopmental Disorders. The Session was attended by 58 staff and teachers of SOS School. Ms. Ayesha Arooj Clinical Psychologist, gave a detailed presentation covering Autism, ADHD, and Specific Learning Disabilities. She provided valuable insights into the diagnosis, symptoms, and prognosis of these disorders, emphasizing the significance of early intervention and personalized support. Dr. Husna Albab, Physiotherapist and SIT discussed the importance of physical activities and incorporating play-based learning into children's routines. She stressed that children should engage in at least 60 minutes of unstructured physical activity throughout the day, and encouraged fostering a connection with nature. The presentations concluded with a question-and-answer session. Ms. Sana Saeed, Principal of SOS School expressed her gratitude to the ASDWT team for organizing the session and requested a similar session for SOS Village Mothers to increase their understanding of these issues. ASDWT welcomed this suggestion and looks forward to planning future activities with SOS.

Awareness Session for SPARC 2024-06-11

ASDWT Lahore conducted an Awareness Session on Neurodevelopmental Disorders for the SPARC (Society for the Protection of Rights of Children) team. The Seminar was opened by Ms. Saira Mir, Marketing Coordinator of ASDWT. Ms. Ayesha Arooj Clinical Psychologist gave a comprehensive presentation on Autism, ADHD and Specific Learning Disabilities. She provided insights into the diagnosis, symptoms, and prognosis of these conditions, and highlighted the importance of early intervention and individualized support. She also discussed the impact of social and environmental factors on these disorders. Ms. Sabeen Almas (Programme Manager SPARC) appreciated the presentation and discussed ways and means to improve social outcomes for girls with disabilities. Ms. Rukhsana Shah stressed the need to involve parents, families and communities in adding value to different roles of each and every member of the community, with whatever disability, for building a strong civil society in the country.

Financial Literacy and Money management for Autistic People 2024-06-05

ASDWT Lahore conducted a zoom session on “Financial Literacy and Money management for Autistic People”. Ms. Rukhsana Shah (CEO of ASDWT) talked about functional financial literacy and financial education. She also guided the steps about opening a bank account and how to remove barriers for financial inclusion. The presentation ended with a Q&A session that also provided further insights on the topic.

Assessment Camp in Dar ul Sukun 2024-06-10

The Autism Spectrum Disorder Welfare Trust (ASDWT) team recently conducted a comprehensive assessment of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at Dar ul Sukun. The assessment aimed to evaluate the children's cognitive, social, and communication skills, identifying their unique strengths, challenges, and potential. The ASDWT team, comprising experienced professionals in the field of autism, employed a multidisciplinary approach to assess the children. This assessment will enable the creation of personalized development plans tailored to meet their specific needs, enhancing their skill development, independence, and social integration. The assessment was a vital step in empowering the children with autism at Dar ul Sukun, and the partnership between ASDWT and Dar ul Sukun demonstrates a shared commitment to supporting these exceptional individuals. By working together, both organizations aim to provide specialized resources and support, fostering a brighter future for the children.

Team ASDWT conducted a session with parents of children with Nurodevelopmental Disorders at Pakistan Down Syndrome Association (PDSA), Gulstan-e-Johar, Karachi. It was interactive session in which parents and therapists participated actively. The topic "Behavior Modification" under Parent Support Group was conducted by Ms. Maryam Erum and Mr. Moazzaz Ali focusing on different techniques which parents can apply at home. On 7th a session was conducted by Ms. Ayesha Arooj, ACP, of ASDWT on Mental Health issues and Stress Management. On 14th September, Ms. Rukhsana Shah (CEO ASDWT) conducted a session on Training and Employment of adults with Autism and I/DD. She highlighted the fact there is no rocket science involved in extending training opportunities to adults with Autism and I/DD alongside their peers, provided that trainers are sensitized as to their special features and needs, and develop structured transition plans, curricula modification and essential support strategies for their vocational training and subsequent job-readiness. The Zoom sessions were attended by more than 400 PVTC Principals and Teachers from all over the Punjab. These training sessions was interactive and followed by Q&A segments in which audience participated.

She also talked about Specific Learning Disabilities, especially Dyslexia. She talked about assessment as well as management strategies. Dr. Husna Albab (Physiotherapist, Sensory Integration Therapist) gave a presentation on The Power of Physical Activities and How to Integrate Physical Activities in School Curricula. She highlighted that misconception about all work and no play is bad for an individual’s physical and mental health. She emphasizes the incorporation of physical activities and connecting with nature are important requisites for a healthy mind. ASDWT Karachi conducted a workshop and hands-on training on the topic "Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills-Revised" (ABLLS-R) by Ms. Faiza Ilyas (Sen. Cli. Psychologist). There was an overwhelming response for registration to attend this physical workshop. The workshop was attended by professionals including spe. educators, vocational trainers, speech therapists, behavior therapists, clinical and educational psychologists and students.Ms. Faiza Illyas explains in detail the importance, administration and implementation of ABLLS-R and its method of scoring. She also highlighted the practical implications of ABLLS-R with special needs children. Mrs. Rukhsana Shah, CEO, ASD Welfare Trust conducted a training workshop on the topic “Puberty Issues in children with Autism & other Disorders". She gave a very thought provoking talk on the importance of recognizing and managing puberty issues in children with ASD and other disabilities. She stressed that it was vital for parents and teachers to educate and prepare children in matters relating to their body and its functions so that they can cope up with puberty related anxieties and be able to protect themselves from exploitation. On October 2, 2021, ASDWT Karachi invited Ms. Neena Wagh, Founder Director ALLAP in India for a Zoom session on Independent Living. Neena is a writer and activist, and also parent of a young man with autism. In her talk, she said that a mother is the nucleus of the family, but the lack of empowerment of women in our society undermined their confidence and ability to provide a nurturing environment to their children with autism. She emphasised the need for women to become aware of their crucial role in providing emotional and social support to their autistic children and adults to enable them to live independent and fulfilled lives.

Sing Language for Autism 2021-08-03

ASDWT Lahore arranged a free Zoom session on Sign Language for Autism conducted by Mrs. Nusrat Rashid, a sign language teacher and former Principal RISE, Lahore. She said that it is important to teach different kinds of communication skills that seek to reduce problematic behaviours in persons with autism. Sign Language can help social and learning skills, and improve their behaviours as they would have an alternate way to make themselves understood and heard. 75 participants attended the session and asked several questions. Participants al-so requested that the session to be held again as they took keen interest in learning sign language for teaching the same to their children.

ASDWT conducted an online meeting with NGO Power 99 Foundation to discuss Assisted Living Facility options for Adults with ASD. The main speaker was Ms. Anila Ansari who is based in Scotland but is keen to develop residential facility for adults with autism in Haripur. Many parents showed interest in the Project and it was decided that Ms. Anila Ansari would develop a blue print by September 30th, 2021, and share it with parents through another Zoom meeting organised by the ASDWT.

ASDWT Lahore organized a webinar on “Light in the Music” conducted by Mr. Sohail Khan, Music Educationist and Therapist, CMT (London), BMGIM Advance Level (USA). He is a pioneer in introducing Music Therapy in Pakistan. In his presentation he said that music therapy is an interpersonal process in which the therapist uses music and all its facets - physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic, and spiritual - to help children with special needs achieve nonmusical goals. Mr. Sohail Khan has trained a batch of Music Therapists belonging to different parts of the country and they can this therapy upon request.
