ASD Welfare Trust Lahore organized a zoom session for Lawyers on "Autism, ADHD, Conduct Disorder, and Juvenile Delinquency".A presentation was given by Rukhsana Shah, CEO of the Trust, in which she explained different Neurodevelopmental Disorders and said that the judicial system needs to recognize these Persons so that they can get due consideration and a fair trial. Trainers Ms. Faiza Ilyas and Ms. Ayesha Urooj conducted this interactive session.
The ASDWT Lahore team organised a refreshing activity for mothers of children with neurodiversity. Mothers chatted with each other and made friends. Yoga expert, Ms. Gulerana Mubashar gave a demonstration on basic Yoga exercises and tips to relieve daily stress. Musicians Nazar Abbas and Mohsin Darbhuka (Sultans Band) played various songs and the guests enjoyed the music. This was followed by a cake cutting ceremony and refreshments. Mothers have especially requested for another get-together which will be announced soon.

ASDWT Lahore hosted a workshop on ‘The Magic of Music Therapy’ conducted by Mr. Sohail Khan, Managing Director, Pakistan Institute of Music and Education in Lahore. Mr. Khan described the importance of music therapy interventions for autism and special needs. He also explained how music therapy can be used to improve speech and other disorders as research has shown that music activates every area of the brain. On October 2, 2021, ASDWT Karachi invited Ms. Neena Wagh, Founder Director ALLAP in India for a Zoom session on Independent Living. Neena is a writer and activist, and also parent of a young man with autism. In her talk, she said that a mother is the nucleus of the family, but the lack of empowerment of women in our society undermined their confidence and ability to provide a nurturing environment to their children with autism. She emphasised the need for women to become aware of their crucial role in providing emotional and social support to their autistic children and adults to enable them to live independent and fulfilled lives.

Resource Person Ms. Anisa Sohail (Nutritionist) talked about different types of diets that can be followed for Children on Spectrum. She also highlighted the importance of balanced nutritional intake and proposed to parents to introduce healthy changes in the dietary regimen for the children.

Dr. Salma Khalil discussed the different stages of emotional and physical changes during the teenage years, and how important it was for parents to provide sex education to handle behavior and other changes taking place during adolescence.
ASDWT Lahore arranged a free Zoom session on Sign Language for Autism conducted by Mrs. Nusrat Rashid, a sign language teacher and former Principal RISE, Lahore. She said that it is important to teach different kinds of communication skills that seek to reduce problematic behaviours in persons with autism. Sign Language can help social and learning skills, and improve their behaviours as they would have an alternate way to make themselves understood and heard. 75 participants attended the session and asked several questions. Participants al-so requested that the session to be held again as they took keen interest in learning sign language for teaching the same to their children.
ASDWT organized extension lectures from 9th to 16th July 2021 for Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC). The topics including Anxiety Disorders, Behavioural Disorders and Depressive Disorders. The sessions were interactive with participation from a good number of students.
ASDWT in collaboration with the Department of Psychology, Sindh University Jamshoro conducted a series of lectures for 55 students of final year BSc and Masters on “Childhood Disorders” The lectures and presentations were conducted on Zoom twice a week from August to October 2021. ASDWT, Karachi invited Ms. Sarwat Zehra, Head, Department of Special Educational Needs, Civilization Public School for an online session on the role of the Shadow Teacher and Resource Person in private schools. She talked about Inclusive Education and emphasized that inclusion policies are necessary to be put in place by both the government and the private sector in order to provide opportunities to differently abled persons.
Ms. Asma Ahmed, Senior Clinical Psychologist ASDWT Karachi, conducted an online training session for Karachi Medical & Dental Council (KMDC). She covered the topic “Understanding Autism and overview of its Management”. It was an informative and interactive session attended by 150 participants.
A Five-day online Training Course on TEACCH Programme was conducted by Ms. Farah Amanat, Senior Clinical Psychologist ASDWT on Zoom.
ASDWT conducted an online meeting with NGO Power 99 Foundation to discuss Assisted Living Facility options for Adults with ASD. The main speaker was Ms. Anila Ansari who is based in Scotland but is keen to develop residential facility for adults with autism in Haripur. Many parents showed interest in the Project and it was decided that Ms. Anila Ansari would develop a blue print by September 30th, 2021, and share it with parents through another Zoom meeting organised by the ASDWT.
ASDWT Lahore organized a webinar on “Light in the Music” conducted by Mr. Sohail Khan, Music Educationist and Therapist, CMT (London), BMGIM Advance Level (USA). He is a pioneer in introducing Music Therapy in Pakistan. In his presentation he said that music therapy is an interpersonal process in which the therapist uses music and all its facets - physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic, and spiritual - to help children with special needs achieve nonmusical goals. Mr. Sohail Khan has trained a batch of Music Therapists belonging to different parts of the country and they can this therapy upon request.
ASDWT Karachi conducted a three-part series of training on “Behaviour Management” for the Parents Support Group KPK. The session was attended by large number of parents and professionals.
ASDWT, Karachi invited Ms. Humaira Khurshid, Clinical Psychologist & Behavior Interventionist on to discuss “Safety Concerns of Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders”. It was an informative session attended by around 70 participants, mainly parents and teachers.
ASDWT Karachi invited Ms. Sajida Ali, Senior Special Educator and Autism Expert, Director Pakistan Centre for Autism, Karachi to talk about Home based management of persons with ASD. It was a an informative and inspiring session with practical tips for managing children, designing teaching materials and using them at home. .
A new series “ASK ASDWT” was launched by ASDWT Karachi to address queries in Facebook live sessions. Team of Clinical psychologists entertained questions of attendees and answered them in detail. After receiving overwhelming response, a second session of the series was conducted on 28th May, 2021.
To promote understanding and management of ASD children during the pandem-ic, ASDWT Karachi launched a series of training programmes for Therapists, Special Educators, Teachers and Social Activists from Sindh. First part of the series was conducted on “Autism Spectrum Disorder, Signs and symptoms” on 17th February, 2021. The second part was conducted on 10th March, 2021 on “Management of Autism Spectrum Disorder”. Signs and symptoms, red flags and detail management strategies were discussed. The program was attended by participants from Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and Azad Kashmir.
Topic: Strategies for Developing Routines at Home
On 4th Feburary, ASDWT Karachi conducted a session of Parent Support Group on “Theory of Mind” for the parents of Karachi. It was a different and new topic for the parents. The session was attended by a large number of parents and professionals. Considering the interest and demand, another session on “Stages and Strategies of Theory of Mind” was conducted on 18th March, 2021 in which an in depth explanation of the Theory of Mind was given by Team ASDWT followed by a lively discussion.
ASDWT Lahore conducted a workshop on Zoom for the Caring Centre for Special Children, Gujranwala. Ms. Farah Amanat, Clinical Psychologist ASDWT, Lahore presented Home Based Management for Autistic children. By giving real life examples, she informed the participants as to how visual schedules, physical structure, task orientation and work system could be devised for these children. She explained the management techniques for ASD in detail. Later, an interactive question and answer session was held in which parents asked a number of pertinent questions.
ASDWT Lahore conducted two webinars on “Eight Essential Skills for Autism Spectrum Disorder.” Sessions were held on 2nd and 24th March, 2021 attended by professionals and parents of children with Autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Resource person was Director of Autism Care Centre Ms. Maliha Latif. During her presentation she discussed crucial skills such as requesting, waiting, completing 10 consecutive tasks, following directions, performing daily living skills and learning about health and safety, etc. She also stressed that it would be better to start practicing functional skills and vocational training plan by the age of 5-6 years of the ASD children so that they could successfully learn to do specific assigned tasks.
ASD Welfare Trust Lahore conducted an online session on “Social Skills Training for ASD.” The presenter was Ms. Sara Khan, a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst from USA. She described and explained the range of skills, tools and strategies used to help ASDs. Essential components of intervention and antecedent management control were also discussed, along with different behaviour modifications and skill acquisition strategies. She elaborated these concepts by using real life examples.
ASD Welfare Trust Lahore conducted an online workshop for Zunnorain Welfare Trust, Faisalabad. Ms. Farah Amanat, Clinical Psychologist ASDWT Lahore presented home based management options for autistic children during the pandemic. She explained how to devise schedules, physical structures, task orientation and work systems by giving examples.
ASDWT Lahore arranged a zoom session on “Transition to Mainstream Schools.” The resource person was Ms. Ammara Sikandar, who has a Graduate Certificate in Autism & Behavioral Sciences and a Bachelor’s De-gree in Education from York University, Toronto, Canada. In her presentation she described different issues related to transitioning in to the mainstream setup. She said that the preparation for this change over has to be started at an early age for children to have a relatively seam-less transition. Although it is a tedious task that requires a lot of patience and perseverance, nevertheless it has to be done for the betterment of ASD children.
ASDWT Lahore organized an online session on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with Dr Sara Subhan and Ms. Ayesha Jabeen, Assistant Professors at the Department of Clinical Psychology, University of Management and Technology (UMT). The trainers focused on anxiety aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Real life examples and video modeling were used by both the speakers to explain Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

On 16th October, ASDWT Karachi conducted a Parent Support Group on Social Communication Skills Part One for Karachi Parents’ Group. Part two was held on 17th November, 2020 while Part Three was held on 18th December, 2020 jointly conducted by Ms. Asma Ahmed of ASDWT, Karachi, and Ms. Tehmina Syed, Speech and Language Therapist, Institute of Clinical Psychologist, University of Karachi. 94 parents attended the three sessions and benefitted from the workshops.

On the special request of parents and teachers, ASDWT Lahore, held a webinar on “Anxiety Disorder, Assessment and Management including Stressors in COVID 19”by Farah Amanat. During her presentation she talked about anxiety in general and the one caused by the current pandemic. 68 people benefited from her talk and got to learn about Cognitive Behaviour Therapy as well as some useful exercises to do at home.
ASDWT Karachi held an online session for Students of the Department of Psychology, Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science & Technology (FUUAST). Presentation was made by Ms. Faiza Ilyas, (Clinical Psychologist) on the topic of “Learning Disabilities and Strategies”. It was an interactive session and 76 students of the Department participated.
ASDWT Karachi organized online workshop on Emotional regulation of Children with Special Needs. Resource person Dr. Hina Imran (Associate Professor & Rehabilitation In-charge, Institute of Clinical Psychology) conducted the session. A total number of 87 participants attended and benefitted from her knowledge and experience.
ADWT Lahore, organized a webinar on “Family Therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorders.” Resource person was Ms. Rubina Mehmood, former Principal Clinical Psychologist, Psychiatry Department, Mayo Hospital Lahore. She discussed the role of family support in progress of children with special needs. ASDWT offers special thanks for sharing her know-how and practical skills. The session generated a lot of interest and was attended by 80 participants.
Ms. Farah Amanat from ASDWT, Lahore conducted a webinar on “Anxiety Disorder and Management Techniques”. Apart from explaining the different types of anxiety disorders, she also talked about formal and informal assessment methods followed by detailed management strategies to be implement in daily life. 65 participants attended the session and made it interactive with a lots of questions and discussion
ASDWT Lahore organized a Webinar on “Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Children”. Resource person was Dr. Shazia Maqbool, Head Department of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, The Children Hospital and Institute of Child Health, Lahore. Her presentation focused on the initial signs and symptoms of neurodevelopmental disorders and their management techniques. She also shed light on the impact of exposure to excessive screen time during COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on the mental health of children. One hundred and thirty (130) people from all over Pakistan benefited from the discourse. ASDWT expresses special thanks for her time and giving an elaborate presentation on Neurodevelopmental Disorder in children.
On 19th October, 2020 ASDWT Karachi invited Dr. Prem Chand, Head and Director of Pediatric Neurology, AKUH to conduct a Webinar on Epilepsy. It was a comprehensive session that covered all related facets of the illness and the types of seizures. More than 60 parents and professionals across Pakistan attended this session. Questions and Queries were address in detail. ASDWT is thankful to Dr. Prem Chand who shared his expertise and took out time despite his tight schedule.
ASDWT Lahore arranged a webinar for parents, students and professionals by Dr. Nazish Imran, Head of Department of Child and Family Psychiatry, Mayo Hospital Lahore. In her presentation Dr. Nazish discussed phobias, panic disorders, obsessions compulsions, epilepsy and other psychiatric problems in children. She also shared real life examples with participants. The session was quite interactive and lively. ASDWT is grateful to her for sharing her knowledge and expertise. Forty participants profited from her thought provoking presentation on a very relevant topic in the time of pandemic.
ASDWT Lahore held a webinar on “Therapeutic Value of Camel Milk for Autism Spectrum Disorder”. Resource Person was Dr. Deeba Noreen, Associate Professor, School of Life Sciences, FCC University Lahore. In her presentation she explained the therapeutic value of protective proteins, prebiotic, probiotics and nutrition in camel milk and how they had so far helped children with Autism. She also apprised about her research work on “Genetics of Autism Spectrum Disorders.” ASD Welfare Trust assured her of support in collecting research data. More than 40 parents and professionals benefited from her presentation.
Dr. Aniqa Sohail, Head Paediatric Department, Wapda Hospital Lahore facilitated the session and provided excellent inputs for a comprehensive understanding of the problem of microbiota.
An interactive sessions was conducted by ASDWT Karachi for parent support group in Hyderabad on June 26th, 2020 .Parents were able to discuss their problems relating to the current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic. All their concerns were addressed effectively by the ASDWT Team and parents gave a very positive feedback.
ASDWT Lahore arranged an Online Zoom Session on “Learning Apps for Children with Disability” . Mr. Ahmer Sultan, ASDWT IT expert put up a comprehensive presentation on Learning Apps which generated a great deal of excitement and motivation among professionals of Sufi School for Special Learners.

Ms. Farah Amanat spoke on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder which generated a positive feedback. She stressed that it was vital for parents and teachers to identify and recognize early sign and symptoms of ADHD to enable all children to learn in an inclusive educational environment.
ASDWT Lahore held a training workshop at the Ali Institute of Education, an organization dedicated to training of teachers from all educational institutions in the province. Rukhsana Shah gave a an interactive presentation on Understanding Autism, followed by in-depth discussion.
